Prescot Railway Station Transformation

Improving station access during the COVID-19 pandemic

Date: June 2021

Cost: £3.6m

Client: Northern

Sectors:
Rail

The Challenge

Improved accessibility & modernisation

Part of Knowsley Council’s major investment programme into the town, The Input Group were tasked to improve the accessibility at Prescot railway station and make it more welcoming to visitors; both local and further afield.

This extensive project included the installation of a new lift shaft on each platform, upgrading all visitor facilities across the station as well as extensive remodelling of the various access points to-and-from the station.

Along with creating a warmer welcome to the station and the town itself, the improvements will also help improve the connection between the station and Prescot town centre.

Special manoeuvres were required throughout the life of the project, including the installation of a lift shaft.

Due to the disruptive nature of the lift installation work, some of it needed to be undertaken overnight.

The Input Group worked alongside key stakeholders to ensure the works wee carried out safely, effectively and efficiently.

Our Approach

COVID safe & efficient works

Work on the project started in June 2020 and continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning that all relevant safety procedures had to be carefully adhered to and monitored throughout this difficult time.

Requiring a new lift shaft on each platform, a contemporary ticket office was also built, along with creating fully accessible toilet facilities, enhanced energy efficient lighting and modernised signage across the station.

We also added new footway treatments, landscaping and signage to the areas around the station and on key walking routes between the railway station, town centre and bus station.

A special event to marked the completion of a major improvement works to upgrade facilities and improve access at Prescot railway station.

The Input Group also installed a contemporary ticket office, fully accessible toilet facilities and enhanced lighting and signage throughout.

The Outcome

An improved passenger experience

As well as creating a warmer welcome to the railway station and the town itself, these new improvements help to provide an easier connection between the station and Prescot town centre.

The car park has also been resurfaced and remodelled to include a dedicated drop-off area, as well as the installation of new secure cycle parking. The upgrades have now made the station truly accessible, with step free access between the car park, the station platforms and station facilities.

The station now boasts a new lift shaft on each platform, a modern refurbished ticket office, new fully accessible toilet facilities and enhanced lighting and signage throughout the station.

Steve Kilby, senior project manager at Northern, said: “I am delighted that the improvement works at the Prescot station are now complete, especially as they continued despite the pandemic. Through a truly collaborative approach, Northern, Merseytravel, Knowsley Council, Network Rail, Seed Architects and The Input Group have worked so hard to make this happen under challenging circumstances.

The £3.6m project was delivered on time, within budget and with no accidents. The station is now much more welcoming and accessible for people who not only live in the town, but also for people who are visiting Prescot.
